Dal Pakora Curry Recipe | Dal Pakoda Sabji | Bengali Lentil Fritters Curry ( Bora’r Jhol )

Dal Pakora Curry is a very soul satisfying ” Comfort Food “. This is a Traditional Bengali Recipe, learned from generation to generations . Pakora / Pakoda in Hindi or Bora in Bengali, Fritters in English are very similar to Vada that are made in Andhra Pradesh with Lentils / Dal, but the use of different spices in Dal Pakoda Curry ( In Hindi) or Bora’r Jhol ( In Bengali ) or Lentil Fritters Curry ( In English) makes this dish very interesting and delicious. You can use lot of other seasonal Vegetables to make this dish more wholesome. This dish in Bengali is also called ” Daler Borar Tarkari” , “Tarkari” means Sabji in Hindi and Curry is English

Preparation time -10 minutes

Cooking time -20 minutes

Ingredients –

Red Masoor dal – 1 cup

(Soak it for 1-2 hrs )

Green chillies – 2-3

Ginger -1 inch

Curd -2 tspn

Salt- according to taste

Turmeric powder -1tspn

Red Chilli Powder -1 tspn

Sugar(optional)

Chopped onion -1 med bowl

Chopped Tomatoes – 1 med bowl

1 large potato cut into pieces

Cumin seeds -1 tspn

Bay leaf -1

Hing -1 pinch

Ginger-cumin paste -2 tspn

Garam masala powder -1 tspn

Desi ghee -1 tspn

Mustard oil -2-3 tblspn

to cook the curry Refined oil to deep fry the Pakodas

Step -1

Grind the soaked Masoor dal with curd,ginger and green chillies. Add salt,sugar(optional) and turmeric powder to the batter.Add some chopped onion to the batter (optional)

Step -2

Heat some refined oil and drop little portions of the batter in the hot oil. Flip and fry the Pakodas from the other sides too. Keep them aside

Step -3

Heat 2 tblspn of mustard oil in a kadhai. Add the cumin seeds and the bayleaf. Add a pinch of hing. Saute it and add the potatoes. Fry the potatoes for a while and then add the chopped onion. Fry the onion until it turns translucent. Add the tomatoes. Mix and cook.

Step -4

Add the ginger-cumin paste and mix well. Add turmeric powder,red chilli powder,salt,sugar and stir for a few seconds .Add a cup of water. Cover and cook for 5 minutes.

Step -5

After the potatoes turn tender add the fried dal pakodas. Add ghee and garam masala and serve it hot with plain rice,chapati, parantha etc.
