Railway Mutton Curry is an authentic famous British Colonial Era Dish, which was served to First Class compartment passengers in long distance trains in India. This 100 year old Anglo-Indian Mutton Recipe, has it’s Legacy of the British Raj and it was very popular among the Britishers and the Indians. This recipe is a milder version of the famous Bengali Mutton recipe ” Mangshor Jhol ” or ” Kosha Mangsho” . The Masalas and the Coconut milk used in this famous recipe is the game changer.This extremely popular British Bengali mutton / lamb dish, is now a lost recipe.

Serves – 4
Mutton or Lamb – 600 Grams
Curd – 2 Tblspn
Ginger Garlic paste : 2 Tspn
Turmeric Powder – 2 Tspn
Red Chilli Powder
Salt and Sugar – according to Taste
Ghee -1 Tspn
Garam Masala – 1 Tspn
Coconut Milk – 100 ml
Chopped Onion – 3 medium Size
Mustard Oil – 6 Tspn
Potato – 3 medium size, cut into halves
Whole Spices – Bay leaves, green and black cardamon, Cinnamon Sticks, Cumin Seeds .
Special Railway Mutton Masala :
Cumin Seed, Coriander Seed, Fennel Seed, and Black Pepper corns roasted and grounded together.
Water – 1 glass
Method Of Cooking :
Marinate the Mutton or Lamb with Curd, Salt, Turmeric powder and red Chilli powder. Marinate it for an hour.
Step – 2
Heat the mustard oil. Fry the potatoes with little salt & turmeric powder. Take them out and keep aside when they turn golden brown in color. Now add the whole spices and saute. Add the chopped onion and when it turns translucent add the Ginger Garlic paste. Add the chopped Tomato and stir well.
When the tomato turns soft add salt, Turmeric Powder, Red Chilli Powder and Sugar. Now add the marinated mutton. Fry it for 2 minutes and add the salt and green chillies. Cook it for another 15 minutes . Add the dry roasted special railway mutton masala. Add the fried potatoes and cook for a minute mixing all the ingredients together. Add a glass of water.
Step – 4
Now cook the mutton in a Pressure Cooker. Allow 3-4 whistles until the Mutton / Lamb turns tender. Open the Lid of the pressure cooker and add coconut milk, Garam Masala powder and Ghee. Serve it hot with Rice or any Indian Bread like Naan or Chapati
